krooked...

(got the photo from thrasher.)
i really miss skateboarding sometimes. i was never very good at it, but i loved doing it. the feeling of landing a few new trick. or just tearing down the road, wind in hair, smoke in hand...
i haven't skated in years, and i have no idea who's doing what or whatever. a few of my friends still skate, one of 'em manages a skate shop near my house, so i go over once or twice a week and say hello. have a coffee with him. shoot the shit. ryan machan, if you live in london, you know him. good painter too. i'll put some of his art up on here eventually.
anyway, when i used to skate, i remember the excitement when a new skate video would come out. questionable was huge.
so anyway, i'm over there a couple days ago, and they just got the new krooked video. so i check it out. makes me feel good to see all the older guys who my heroes when i was skating, still doing it. it's kind of like the same way i feel about the rappers i grew up listening to. so yeah, it's a dope video, i'm sure i'll go back over this week and watch it again.

acoustic killer...

a few nights ago this dude plays at the bar. solo. some long-haired screechy dude. brought three guitars with him. watched his parents unload the van and set up his gear. set up a merch table, dad ran that. dad tried to charge people cover. dude, nobody's here to see your kid. i figure it's one of those situation where he's an only child and mommy and daddy worship the ground he walks on. why do you need three guitars to play in a pub? there are eight people here, why are you screaming? dude finishes his set and is standing around, trying to talk to the three or four people who are still there. meanwhile, mommy and daddy load up all his gear into the van. spoiled brat. how are you going to stand there and watch your mom lugging an amp while you're trying to talk to some girl who you have no chance of scoring with? why do parents fuck up their kids' heads with this worship-the-ground-you-walk-on shit? sorry man, your music isn't that good, your singing style leaves much to be desired, and you're ugly. go be a lawyer or something, cut your hair, nobody cares. mommy, daddy, i know you love your son, and you want him to follow your dreams, but he's not going to be a star. you need to realize this, you need to move on.
okay?
i just typed up this whole story about what happened yesterday when i went for a run, but sometimes, you just gotta keep certain things to yourself...

grab 'em in the biscuits...

3:24 am.
finished work.
pretty chill night.
but i'm not complaining.
sending tim the rest of the money tomorrow to pay for the cds.
they're getting pressed as i type.
i imagine right now some little strange man in the cd pressing plant,
working all night long,
running the machines,
as the ok cobra madness is stamped into plastic and sealed into cases...
it likely happens nothing like i imagine,
but that's how i want it to be.

my man scott just emailed me - he finally listened to our album - and said that he thought it sounded like what would happen if dj shadow and beck made an album together. huge compliment dude, thanks.
so, i'm making progress with protools.
a while back i went on the guerilla funk website to order a public enemy t-shirt,
and while i was ordering,
i figured i might as well order paris' break cds.
so i got my order a couple of weeks ago...
got the cds,
but not the t-shirt.
got a note instead.
out of stock.
they said they'll send it when they get more.
fuck, i wanted that t-shirt.
this reminds me of when i was a kid and i ordered a bunch of shit from priority records... i got all my ice cube t-shirts, and my nwa beanie, even my free gangsta locs... but i never got my compton county jail shirt. fuck, at 15 years old, i would have been the shit wearing that to school. but it never came. i sent a couple of letters asking for it, but it never came.
anyway, i've got these break cds, so i've been playing around with them.
over the weekend i figured out how to cut the break into four bars,
adjust the bpm on the protools session to match the break,
then duplicate the break so it loops constantly.
i was so happy when i figured it out,
i was doing cartwheels.
not really, but you know what i mean.
i've got the mic hooked up,
figured out how to record vocals.
so stoked.
new songs in the works.
wrote a new song yesterday, i'm stoked on it.
was playing around with a few lines i wrote a year or two ago,
that i never finished.
i'm listening to kid frost's "la raza" right now as i type.
fucking dope song.
i've got an idea for another book i want to write...
a book about bars.
for bartenders/servers and customers.
like a how-to guide for both being a server and a customer.
sometimes i serve people, and i just think to myself:
"do you live in a cave? have you never been to a bar before?"
some people, it just seems like they must live under a rock or something.
i've worked on-and-off in bars for clost to ten years now,
and i've heard a million stories.
could be a cool book...
i'd like to interview a bunch of veteran bartenders/servers,
compile the best stories/anecdotes,
and include lists of basic serving tips,
some recipes,
basic liquor/wine/beer knowledge,
as well as guides for customers on how to not be annoying,
how to pick people up, what to order, how to order, how to tip,
and a zillion other things.
somebody needs to call my little brother and bug him to book time off work so i can book his flight to get out here for our trip.
also, apparently i'm not allowed to wear a silk kung-fu suit to his wedding... what's that all about?
i'm going back to cali.
i need to find more time to paint. my new painting has been sitting in my room for two weeks, and i haven't been able to find the time to finish it. i know exactly what i want to do, i just need a few hours to do it.
i need to stop being so ambitious with my time.
things take years ryan, slow down.
i've got a good feeling about this.
where my homies?
doowhutchalike.
this is how we chill.
tonite.
okay kids, i'm out.
g'night,
ryan

i can't remember if i posted this already or not, and i don't feel like scrolling down to see if i did. so, if you've already seen it, ignore. if you haven't, this is a little video of some random footage from the party my coworkers threw for me at the alex p. keaton, in celebration of my jack richardson music award. good times.
